ASTON VILLA DON'T WANT RAFAEL BENITEZ

Wigan Athletic have given Roberto Martínez permission to speak to Aston Villa about replacing Gerard Houllier in the hot seat, the Guardian reports.

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan confirmed Villa's approach but said he was confident Martínez would reject the chance to move to Villa.

Bolton Wanderers manager Owen Coyle is also in contention for the position, but Villa officials deny previous reports linking former Liverpool manager Rafael Benítez and former England boss Steve McClaren with the position.

LONDON PLEASE, NOT MANCHESTER

Chelsea are believed to be in pole position to sign Netherlands playmaker Wesley Sneijder for £30million from Inter Milan because the Dutchman's wife reportedly would prefer a move to London rather than Manchester.

With Guus Hiddink almost certain to arrive at Stamford Bridge in some capacity, the 64-year-old is believed to have given Roman Abramovich the green light to sign his fellow countryman.

Manchester United had previously reportedly been targetting Sneijder as a replacement for Paul Scholes.

... BETTER NEWS FOR UNITED ...

Blackburn Rovers defender Phil Jones has travelled to Manchester United for a medical as he closes on a move to Old Trafford.

The in-demand soccer star remains a target for Barclays Premier League rivals Arsenal and Liverpool, but Sky Sports reports the English champions have all but won the transfer race.

Liverpool were thought to be the early front-runners to sign for the England Under-21 international, but United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, with a healthy transfer chest of his own, is set to land a player many pundits believe will be a mainstay for the senior national side for years to come.

United are understood to be ready to offer Jones a five-year contract, despite widespread reports he was to undergo a medical at Liverpool's training ground.

CHELSEA CHASING CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN

Chelsea will scout Ajax and Denmark midfield star Christian Eriksen at the European Under-21 Championship finals, talkSPORT has reported.

Eriksen is seen as the hottest prospect in the Dutch Eredivisie, but money is no object at Stamford Bridge.

Hiddink, expected to move to Chelsea in some capacity this summer, is said to be keen on a string of young stars, of whom Eriksen, 19, is one.

Eriksen's contract with Ajax expires in 2014.

ARSENAL SIGN DEFENDER

Arsene Wenger has made his first signing of the close season, with Finland Under-21 defender Carl Jenkinson joining from League One side Charlton Athletic for an undiclosed fee.

Jenkinson, 18, born in England to a Finnish mother, mostly plays at full-back but can also fill in at centre-back - which he has done with Charlton since making his first-team debut in late 2010.

Wenger has vowed to overhaul his squad after a sixth successive campaign without a trophy, in particular targetting defenders, and the Daily Mirror reports he is also in talks with Blackburn Rovers centre-back Christopher Samba and Bolton Wanderers counterpart Gary Cahill.

Wenger will have to pay around £12 million to land Samba, who move would deal a blow to Blackburn as they are already losing Phil Jones.

BLACK CATS WANT RED DEVILS

Sunderland have launched a triple raid on Manchester United after losing Jordan Henderson to Liverpool, the Daily Mail reports

Black Cats manager Steve Bruce moved quickly to ease fans' fears for next season by bidding around £12million for Wes Brown, Darron Gibson and John O'Shea.

The United trio all struggled for starts last season, and they could be tempted with a move away from Old Trafford for first-team football.
